One Man's Influence on Georgia: One Woman's Quest to Tell His Story

Join the Women's Business Network for a special luncheon discussion with author Lee C. Dunn regarding her book Cracking the Solid South: The Life of John Fletcher Hanson, Father of Georgia Tech.

Lee Dunn has researched southern history, garden and landscape history, and genealogy for over twenty years. She has been deeply involved in promoting the preservation and awareness of southern gardens and landscapes for seventeen years, through her service as a leader in The Garden Club of Georgia's historic landscape preservation efforts, and was inducted into UGA's Sigma Pi Kappa Honor Society in recognition of her leadership achievement in historic preservation of Georgia's cultural landscapes.

Current civic involvement includes serving as Chair of The Garden Club of Georgia's Historic Landscape Preservation committee; while also serving on the board of trustees and acquisitions committee of the Cherokee Garden Library at the Atlanta History Center; and as a board member of the Southern Garden History Society.

About the book:

John Fletcher Hanson founded Bibb Marketing, owned the Macon Telegraph, and is considered the father of Georgia Tech. He was a guiding force in the industrialization of the South, especially in manufacturing and transportation. This book chronicles the life of an influential and controversial Georgia industrialist whose impact on the state's post-Civil War development has never been fully explored.

Ms. Dunn will talk about her journey to tell his amazing story and the impact on Atlanta and Georgia. In bringing this remarkable man and his accomplishments to light for the first time, Cracking the Solid South paints an absorbing picture of the economic, political, and social struggles that confronted Georgia after the Civil War and of the many ways one man shaped the course of the state's history.
